Louisiana Bass Festival & Masterclass Series
March 21–23, 2025 // LSU Baton Rouge Campus
The LSU School of Music is pleased to present the 2025 Louisiana Bass Festival, a special event all about contribution, collaboration, inspiration and sharing our passion with all bassists, and creating educational and performance opportunities for young bassists.
Welcome to the Louisiana Bass Festival
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our outstanding guest artists and sponsors. Your continuous support has profoundly impacted the lives of young musicians. We are especially grateful for the extraordinary generosity of our sponsors: Interlochen's remarkable $30,000 scholarship sponsorship; the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's invaluable subbing opportunity for aspiring musicians; Guarneri House's generous provision of a $15,000 bass on loan for a year, along with $750 in store credit; the International Society of Bassists; Pirastro Strings; 050 Rosins; and LSU's vital support through the Manship Guest Artists Fund, Asian Guest Artists Fund, and LSU Bass Fest Support Fund. These contributions directly nurture young talent and create life-changing opportunities.
In 2021, when COVID-19 forced the Bass Festival to go completely virtual, we quickly adapted our competition format to reach students worldwide. This transformation led to video submissions from two remarkable young bassists: Bowen Ha and Po-yu Fang. Bowen, who had previously attended the festival at age 16, demonstrated his continued growth, while we were fortunate to meet Po-yu virtually for the first time. That year, Bowen achieved an exceptional feat, winning first prize in both the solo and orchestra competitions, while Po-yu earned second prize in the solo competition.
In 2022, Po-yu Fang joined LSU as my teaching assistant and became the General Manager of the Louisiana Bass Festival. His talent continued to shine as he won first prize in both the solo and orchestra competitions at the 2023 Bass Festival. I was overjoyed to learn that in 2023, Bowen secured the prestigious fourth-chair position with the San Francisco Symphony, while Po-yu won a section bass position with the Singapore Symphony!
This year is particularly special as we welcome an extraordinary lineup of artists. Our distinguished guests include Thierry Barbé, former principal bass of the National Opera de Paris Orchestra and Professor at the National Superior Conservatory of Music in Paris; Ju-fang Liu, principal bassist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra; George Speed from Florida State University; Martin Rosso from LUCA School of Arts in Leuven, Belgium; LSU Jazz faculty member and my former student John Madere; and Gaelen McCormick, President of the International Society of Bassists and Director of the Eastman Performing Arts Medicine program. We're also thrilled to bring together Bing Luo, Bowen's teacher from Shanghai, who has mentored numerous ISB Youth Division winners, and Derek Weller, who taught me, Ju-fang Liu, and Bowen Ha at Interlochen Arts Academy. Bowen will join us virtually to discuss these incredible journeys that have intertwined so beautifully.
Countless students have flourished through their participation in the Louisiana Bass Festival. I witness firsthand the inspiration and passion that flow between our LSU faculty, students, distinguished guests, and generous sponsors. For this remarkable community and its ongoing support, I am profoundly thankful.
