Dr. Raquel M. Robvais

Raquel M. Robvais is a Senior Instructor at Louisiana State University, currently teaching in the departments of Communication Studies, African and African American Studies and in the Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College. She studies within the field of the rhetoric of health and medicine, considering the symbolic nature and persuasive aspects of bodies, medical discourses, and scientific practices. Specifically, her research interests consider the preoccupation and durability of Blackness as a medicalized marker of difference. Raquel is a recipient of a 2024 American Council of Learned Societies fellowship and 2025 National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship. Her current book project, The Rhetorical Life of Sickle Cell Anemia, examines the historical process in the racialization of Sickle Cell Anemia; it is under contract with Johns Hopkins University Press.
